A Strong Finance Result That Cannot Tell Firms Which Lender Is Best

Personal savings, moneylenders and institutional loans appear together in the strongest statistical predictor of financial access in a study of Indian businesses. That grouping creates a revealing limit: a strong relationship for a combined measure cannot identify which funding route works best.
Published in 2022, the study by K. Rajamani and colleagues surveyed owners or senior executives of 400 micro, small and medium enterprises between January and April 2020. Researchers selected 80 urban businesses from each of five states using nonrandom quotas. Respondents rated 29 questionnaire items on five-point agreement scales.
The researchers used structural equation modelling to test proposed relationships between financing conditions, business characteristics and reported performance. Of four proposed predictors of access, their combined funding-sources measure had the largest positive standardized coefficient, 0.673. This describes an association within the model; it does not mean that adding a funding source increases credit by 67.3%.
Crucially, the analysis did not estimate separate performance benefits for bank loans, personal savings or moneylenders. The paper also describes the funding-source questions differently in its methods and measurement table: the former distinguishes bank types, while the latter includes government schemes and funds from public share offerings. That inconsistency makes the strongest result harder to interpret or reproduce.
Better financial access was also associated with better reported business performance. But the survey cannot establish whether finance improved performance or stronger firms attracted finance. Both assessments came from respondents, and the authors noted reluctance to disclose financial information. Urban quota sampling further limits generalization, particularly to rural enterprises.
The useful takeaway concerns how to read financing claims: evidence connecting a bundle of funding sources with access does not establish the merits of any individual source. Comparing routes would require evidence separating their terms and outcomes. This study offers a framework for those questions, without resolving the choice.
